The founders of Alcoholics Anonymous wrote the 12 Steps based on Biblical scripture, and Pacific Hills believes that a strong spiritual foundation is essential to an effective alcohol rehab treatment. Clients are encouraged to establish or re-establish their relationship with God. The Christian 12-Step program is, as the name would indicate, Christ-centered; the Traditional 12-Step alcohol rehab program permits clients more latitude in their search for a higher power, true to the original concept of the 12-Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Research dating from the mid-1970's shows that alcohol rehab treatment can help many people change destructive behaviors, avoid relapse, and successfully remove themselves from a life of substance abuse and addiction. Recovery from drug addiction is a long-term process and frequently requires multiple episodes of treatment. Based on this research, key principles have been identified that should form the basis of any effective alcohol rehab program:

1. No single alcohol rehab treatment is appropriate for all individuals.
2. Treatment needs to be readily available.
3. Effective alcohol rehab programs attend to multiple needs of the individual, not just his or her drug addiction.
4. An individual's alcohol rehab treatment and services plan must be assessed often and modified to meet the person's changing needs.
5. Remaining in alcohol rehab program for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness.
6. Counseling and other behavioral therapies are critical components of virtually all effective alcohol rehab treatments for addiction.
7. For certain types of disorders, medications are an important element of treatment, especially when combined with counseling and other behavioral therapies.
8. Addicted or drug-abusing individuals with coexisting mental disorders should have both disorders treated in an integrated way.
9. Medical management of withdrawal syndrome is only the first stage of alcohol rehab programs and by itself does little to change long-term drug use.
10. Alcohol rehab treatment does not need to be voluntary to be effective.
11. Possible drug use during treatment must be monitored continuously.
12. Alcohol rehab programs should provide assessment for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases, and should provide counseling to help patients modify or change behaviors that place themselves or others at risk of infection.
13. As is the case with other chronic, relapsing diseases, recovery from drug addiction can be a long-term process and typically requires multiple episodes of alcohol rehab treatment, including "booster" sessions and other forms of continuing care.
