Christians simply need to spend more time in the Word, church and prayer.

Many people in the church don't quite understand why a good Christian would need additional tools in order to get unstuck and continue to grow in their spirituality, their relationships and their personal life. Often when solutions aren't easily found or healing doesn't come quickly, there often comes a question about a person's level of faith or their ability to trust in the Lord. The message to the person can become, "If I were only more spiritual, I'd be free from my pain, sickness or addictions.

Surely God's supernatural power can remove pain, sickness and even chronic addictions instantaneously in some lives. But to most, the "growth factor that the creator designed into the human condition must be taken into consideration as people walk their individual journey toward healing. Some have been freed by the "one-step process but most of us require additional resources, support and time to work from the inside out.

Again and again, Jesus points out our need to confess and face our sinfulness. Denial is clearly not a biblical option. Scripture tells us, "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. (I John 1:8). And, "He who conceals his hatred has lying lips (Prov. 10:18). Religious efforts done by rote without facing our weaknesses become empty rules, lacking "any value in restraining sensual indulgence(Col. 2:23). The good news is that we are safe in the love and grace of God. We can own our badness and not fear condemnation (Rom. 7:9-10).

Patty Clark, survivor of the Trade Center attack revealed to a reporter, "For people who got out of the building, it was by the steps, so steps are very important to the people who lived. For those who recognize they're stuck in a compulsive behavior, the way out is to go by the steps! Christ-centered 12-Step recovery programs abound and there are many proven helpful resources. These biblically-based steps save our lives when sitting in denial leads to certain destruction.
