Attending these self-help group meetings can aid the individual who has attended residential drug rehab avoid relapse through continued support from those who are already living a life of sobriety.
Another advantage to residential drug treatment is that clients help one another begin lives in recovery through the "social model". When clients interact with others who are also attending residential drug rehab, they experience the support of not only the residential drug rehab's staff, but also gain support from each other. The scope of the social model is immeasurable, yet remains crucial and effective. Clients state that they couldn't have succeeded in residential drug treatment without others who are also going through the experience.
"The spiritual part of the program and of recovery, to
me, is the critical piece. Anybody can study the book and anybody
can talk the talk; anybody can go to meetings. So I think for
myself, I had done all of that. What I missed was grabbing hold of
the spiritual component and putting it inside my soul.”
